The 190E Cosworth was a dinosaur before it ever hit the dirt. Left with a brilliantly engineered engine and no racecar to put it into, Mercedes turned to DTM to satisfy its racing needs. But in order to compete in DTM, the car had to be homologated and based on a production car. That meant Mercedes needed to turn its racecar back into a streetI had a 2 litre auto 190E which generally did around 30 mpg , and I achieved a best of 38 mpg on a run of about 1000 miles to Cardiff and back ( the return journey heavily loaded with car parts and a door on a roof rack ) almost all on motorways at the legal limit .
